Martin native wins top award at Tennessee Tech University

JACKSON, Tenn. — Martin native Harrison Simpson won the Derryberry Award at Tennessee Technological University.

The Derryberry is the most prestigious and most competitive award given at TTU. The award is given to a graduating Golden Eagle that best exemplifies scholarship, leadership and citizenship.

Simpson told writers at Tennessee Tech that he is grateful for all the help from faculty, mentors, assistants and family.

“Regardless of whether or not it was in the limelight or whether it was silent work behind the scenes to ensure that the campus or whatever organization I’m a part of runs smoothly, I guess it’s really nice to be recognized for that and know that those achievements were not unsung,” Simpson said.

He is continuing his education by working toward a master’s degree in cybersecurity.

Simpson’s advice to upcoming college students is to embrace opportunity and get out of your comfort zone.
