Lightning strike damages northwest Jackson home, exposes gas line

Bolt hit pecan tree, traveled through gas pipe and caused electrical problems

JACKSON, Tenn. — A northwest Jackson family is cleaning up after a lightning strike late Tuesday night damaged their home and exposed a gas line.

A bolt of lightning hit a 50-foot pecan tree in front of a home on Keelange Cove near University School of Jackson. The electricity exposed the family’s gas line, traveled up the pipe, blew apart the gas meter and caused electrical problems inside the home.

Neighbors more than 100 feet away also reported electrical issues after the strike.

“But our neighbors that are at least 100 to 150 feet away from us also experienced electrical damage so the lightning bolt was had to be very intense,” Crabb said.

Crabb is inviting city or utility officials to look at the damage and the holes before he fills them in this weekend. He is asking anyone interested to contact him by noon Saturday.
