Madison County Democratic Party reacts to Governor Lee’s call for congressional map redraw
PRESS RELEASE FROM THE MADISON COUNTY DEMOCRATIC PARTY:
JACKSON, Tenn. – Tennessee Governor Bill Lee officially called a special legislative session beginning Tuesday, May 5, to redraw Tennessee’s congressional districts. This comes on the heels of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Louisiana v. Callais. The decision guts key protections under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, making it significantly harder to challenge discriminatory, racist district maps.
Statement from Kyle Lusby, Chair of the Madison County Democratic Party “District lines are not just political boundaries. They determine who has power over critical issues like public education, healthcare access, jobs, infrastructure, public safety, and the everyday needs of Madison Countians.
This is a racist and dangerous power grab. While people struggle with real challenges every day, state Republicans are focused on rigging the system to protect themselves and appease Donald Trump. This is an attack on democracy, fair representation, and the voices of our communities.
The Madison County Democratic Party stands firmly against any attempt to dilute voter power or undermine fair representation. We are committed to organizing, mobilizing, and fighting tooth and nail to ensure every voice is heard and every community is fairly represented.”
Core Message:
Tennessee Republicans spent all of this year’s regular session, and the past 15+ years of their one-party control, turning a blind eye to the cost of living crisis, healthcare inaccessibility, and consistent ranking near the bottom in just about every category, but are now poised to quickly weaken minority voter power and silence Tennesseans’ voices just to make Donald Trump happy. This is a racist power grab. It is also a defining moment for democracy in Tennessee. Tennessee Democrats will not roll over for the Republican machine. We will fight to ensure that the voices of all Tennesseans are heard.
