The new ‘apple a day’: Why plant-based diets are on the rise

JACKSON, Tenn. — An apple a day keeps the doctor away… or it used to.

Now, plant-based diets are seeing more of an increase across the country as people are becoming more mindful of what to put in their bodies.

Not to be confused with vegan or vegetarian diets, plant-based diets proportionally focus on foods that come from plants.

But these diets are typically high in fiber, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and low in saturated fat, sodium, and sugars.

“Plant-based diets and plant-based supplements are really becoming so popular because people are becoming more mindful about what they put in their body,” said Registered Dietitian Mia Syn. “Plant-based supplements can support everything from immune health to stress management, even skincare.”

Plant-based diets are typically full of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts, with lesser amounts of dairy and meats.

These diets can help with immune health, which is important as we head into cold and flu season this fall and winter.
