Teens Charged in North Jackson Murder

JACKSON, Tenn. – New details in the arrest of two teens accused in Jackson’s most recent murder. They made their first court appearance on Wednesday, and officers said a third suspect, an adult could soon face a judge as well. The two teens appeared in a detention hearing Wednesday afternoon, where they were told they will both receive mental exams and could be charged as adults instead of juveniles. The murder victim’s mother, Rosella Long said she watched as the two 17-year-olds accused of killing her son walked into the courtroom. “I just wanted to talk to them and ask them why. I wanted to ask them if they know what they did to me,” said Long. She said all she can hope for now is justice in the shooting death of her son, Jarvis Vinson, 23. “It lightens my heart a whole lot, but it’s still not going to bring my son back,” added Long. Investigators have determined Vinson got into a fight in the early morning hours of August 11. The two teens were not involved in the fight, but police said they were called afterwards to retaliate. The teens have been charged with first degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and aggravated assault. Long hopes they will be charged as adults, which could mean spending the rest of their lives in prison. After the hearing, one of the juvenile’s mother came up to the Vinson family and apologized for what her son has done to her family. And although Long said she appreciated the gesture, she said the words will not bring her son back. “But I’ll tell you what, I had 23 glorious years with him, so I have plenty memories of him,” said Long. Police said a second shooter, an unidentified adult, was also in the car with the two teens. The juvenile’s transfer hearing , which will determine if they will be tried as adults, is set for September 5. As of now, they are being held in the juvenile detention center without bond.
