Man Riding Horse Across U.S.

HENDERSON COUNTY, Tenn. – A determined man set out on Thursday to set a world record of riding his horse through every state in the U.S. Marvin Jowers, 57, a South Carolina native who has recently been living in Lexington while working on a farm, will head toward Kentucky on Friday. Jowers said it was a health scare that pushed him into fulfilling a life-long dream of riding his horse through the whole country. Jowers, along with his 8-year-old horse, Toby are not sure how long it will take, but he plans to finish what he has started. With only necessities with him like water and a sleeping bag; Jowers stops when he and Toby are tired and sleeps on the land. “This country’s beautiful. It’s a lot more beautiful than people realize. A lot of people take it for granted, unless you see it from horseback or hiking, you really don’t perceive it as much,” added Jowers. In 1983 Jowers claimed he rode another horse from Colorado to South Carolina, which took him about three months. Jowers said he has already traveled through Oklahoma, Kansas, New Mexico, Texas, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, and South Carolina on horseback, and wants to set a world record of riding through every state in the U.S. Jowers added that he only takes secondary or county roads and said if anyone sees him and Toby to just wave, and not honk.
