Grant Helping Revitalize Downtown Trenton

TRENTON, Tenn. – One West Tennessee city is getting a face lift. Construction is underway in Trenton as part of the city’s downtown enhancement project. City leaders want to bring more people to the area, and get them to shop at local businesses. “The infrastructure downtown, it’s been there for quite a few years, and a lot of it was worn out, a lot of crumbled up curb, and broken sidewalks and different things, and it’s time that we give the old girl a face lift,” said Mayor Tony Burriss. Mayor Burriss said they received $600,000 in grant money from the Tennessee Department of Transportation a few years ago. The city matched 20 percent of it. Now they are finally getting to take advantage of that money. “Replacing all the sidewalks, all the curb and gutter, and adding some landscaping to that, and making safer for pedestrian traffic downtown,” Burriss said. Mayor Burriss said this is just phase one of the project. They are working on getting additional grant money to spruce up even more parts of downtown. “We’re looking at the south side of the courthouse for phase two, and then the north side of the courthouse for phase three,” Burriss said. Those changes mean big plans for some downtown businesses. “We plan to include an outdoor patio, next to the building, and this is going to be an absolute positive for the business,” said business owner Frank Michel. Mayor Burriss said they expect to be done with construction for the first phase of the project by late October.
