Tight Job Market Making West Tennesseans Look Harder for Work

JACKSON, Tenn-More than 600 job applicants attended the state-sponsored Career Fair at Jackson State Community College on Thursday. They said it is only a small step in their difficult job search. According to reports, jobless claims dropped by 12,000 to 334,000 last week. To some, this is a sign of a growing economy; but to many local job seekers, it is not. “Right now they’re just numbers,” said James Turk, a job seeker. “There is no way to account for everybody.” Most job seekers said their search is becoming even more competitive. “It’s difficult to get out there with just a job application or a resume,” said Chase Davenport, a recent college graduate. “It’s a good thing to come to these job fairs and see employers face to face.” Job seekers said career fairs are a small step in the right direction; and in spite of being less than optimistic about the economy, the search must go on. “Each day is a new day to look for a job,” said Turk. According to state officials, there were approximately 30 hiring employers at the career fair.
