Flooding Hits South Fulton

SOUTH FULTON, Tenn. – Storm drains were overwhelmed and Harris Fork Creek overflowed, leading to flooding in South Fulton. “I thought it was going to get in our house and everything,” said resident Bethany Taylor. “It was that high. We have a little weak spot in our floor, and we could see and hear the water running underneath the house.” Residents said it only rained for 30 to 45 minutes, but that was enough to turn streets into creeks. “It just kept rising and rising to where eventually it was up to my waist, and then it got to our doorstep,” said Taylor. With the water pouring down rapidly, many people were forced to evacuate their homes. And in some cases, emergency services had to go into the homes to rescue them. “We did, along with the police department, carry out three children off of Central Avenue, and we carried one woman out of Graham Street,” said Chief David Wilds of the South Fulton Fire Department. “I had a month old and a one year old that I had to get out of here, and it was just a mess,” said Taylor. With the water slowly receding, residents and emergency workers are in limbo, anticipating the next storm. “We’re waiting to see what the next round brings, and hopefully it won’t be near as bad,” said Wilds. Most bridges in South Fulton have been closed as of Monday night until they can be fully inspected. City manager Debra Craig said the city is working to prevent flash flooding like this in the future.
