HUMBOLDT, Tenn. – Children with the Humboldt Boys and Girls Club are enjoying some new improvements as the children head to the club this summer. The organization has received more than $60,000 in grant money. It puts their facility in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Now their building has handicap parking, and a chair lift. “We want to be available to all. Our club is for all young people, and if a child has a mobility issue, we want to be able to get them to that second floor, where they can enjoy the same facilities that all the other kids here enjoy,” said Gil Fletcher, Board of Directors. Like a game room. “They have a lot of games and stuff. It’s very fun,” said camper Carisma Cole. And though workers said none of their current children are handicapped, they have had some who have been injured, like Kaylei Flores, who said she recently had to wear a leg brace, because she dislocated her knee. “I felt upset, like sad that I had to wear it and I couldn’t play or nothing,” Flores said. “She backed her way up the stairs, and the girls helped her down, but she was able to get up the stairs,” said Andrea Stewart, club director. “With the chair lift in operation, it would’ve been great.” Workers said they used the leftover grant money to put three air conditioner units in the gym. Before, they were not air conditioned at all. “I used to not like to go in the gym, because it was always hot, but now I like going in there,” Cole said. So they can play games, and enjoy their summer break. Workers said they will be able to start operating the chair lift on June 20.
