West Tennesseans celebrate 731 Day
JACKSON, Tenn– Sunday marks a special day for west Tennesseans. It’s July 31st, or 731, the same as our area code.
This date inspired the “Our Jackson Home” group to mark the day one big community celebration.
Creator of 731 Day, Katie Howerton said “we decided this year since it happens to be on a weekend that we should kick it off with a lot of different events that we plan.”
Howerton said having events like a pop-up shop is a great way to let local artisans showcase their work and chat with community members about their businesses.
“You get to meet your vendor which we thought was appropriate for 731 day and they can tell you a little bit about why they’re in Jackson and how they make what they make.” Howerton said.
Hub City Love, one of the pop up shop vendors, consist of two moms who say their business is an outlet for them to do what they love.
Hub City Love vendor, Trista Havner said “it’s to celebrate our city but also to kind of show there are makers and people here that are doing really good quality things.”
Soon after the pop up shop several residents headed to what organizers call Jackson’s biggest water balloon fight. There were over 7,310 balloons at the event.
731 attendee, Carter Blankship said “it was real fun and there were tons of water balloons to fight and I got soaked!”
Some said having events like this is a positive way to spend the weekend.
“It’s a good thing that we can all come together without any commotion and just have fun with kids.” said Tamika Owens, 731 Day attendee
One pint-sized resident explained why he wants 731 day to happen all year long, “So we can have more water balloons.”
Howerton said many businesses and departments in the area pitched in to make all of Sunday’s events a success.
