Mississippi Man Drowns Trying to Retrieve His Hat

PICKWICK LAKE, Miss. – Investigators believe a lost hat cost a Mississippi man his life after he jumped into the waters of Pickwick lake, Sunday morning. According to the Hardin County Fire Department, witnesses said Roger Deaton, 54, of Iuka, lost his hat, turned his boat around and jumped into the water to get it. He never resurfaced. Rescuers said he was not wearing a life jacket.
