Local dog rescue group in urgent need of donations
JACKSON, Tenn. — A local dog rescue asks for help as the group is now taking in more dogs than it can afford to care for.
As a nonprofit, Downtown Dogs Group always needs donations, but with a new influx of more dogs than usual, volunteers say their needs are now urgent.
“They need all the help that they can get,” said Ron Snider, a store clerk at R&J Feed Supply. “Most of their operations is run off of donations.”
“It’s urgent right now just because of the amount of intakes that we’ve taken in,” board member Sarah Sessions said. “A lot of them we take in have got medical issues, so we’ve got a lot higher vet bills than maybe some of the other groups would have.”
The group has around 60 dogs looking for homes, but without a facility, the animals are cared for by different foster families. Ringo, who’s pictured above, is among the animals up for adoption.
“This guy right here, we pulled him out from underneath a porch,” Sessions said. “He had mange, he had parvo — he was in the vet for a week. He had over $600 just in medical bills.”
Downtown Dogs partners with local businesses and hospitals in the area. R&J Feed Supply is one of the locations folks can come to donate or buy doggie necessities for the Downtown Dogs organization. Snider said Downtown Dogs has an account that people can add money to.
“It’s a good community function and it’s something that needs to be supported,” Snider said. “You got too many animals that’s out here that needs help that people have not taken care of.”
Downtown Dogs is planning to have a fundraiser later this month at the West Tennessee Farmers Market.
