School Foods Week Celebrated at Liberty H.S.

JACKSON, Tenn.- One area school celebrated locally grown food, Friday. As part of the local foods for Local Schools Week in Tennessee, students enjoyed a special lunch featuring local products. Department of Education officials said the purpose of the program was to celebrate the use of locally grown products in school meals. Part of the events included a tour of the student greenhouse at Liberty High School where hydroponic lettuce is grown for school meals . “They have a greenhouse and they grow lettuce, tomato and cucumbers. The school nutrition department is purchasing this produce from these students to serve in our cafeteria and to use in our fresh fruit and vegetable snack program, said Susan Johnson, the school nutrition supervisor. The students operate the greenhouse as part of their curriculum at Liberty High School.
