Ex-Monterey chief charged over Army bulldozer use
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – A former Monterey police chief has been arrested over a bulldozer that he ordered through a military surplus program meant for law enforcement but used for himself.
According to WTVF-TV (http://bit.ly/10Lx93M), Kevin Phillips is accused of using town drug funds to have the U.S. Army bulldozer delivered to a piece of land he was clearing for his personal use. The state comptroller’s office reported last month that Phillips and the town’s former mayor signed a back-dated lease agreement for the machine after citizens questioned it.
Phillips was booked at the Putnam County Jail on one count of official misconduct Tuesday. He was released on a $1,000 bond.
Phillips, 44, resigned in March. Calls to a number listed for him rang unanswered Tuesday evening.
