JACKSON, Tenn.-On July 26, 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed into law the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. On Friday, many Americans are celebrating the anniversary of the law. Supporters, friends and staff of the Jackson Center for Independent Living marked the 23rd anniversary of the signing of the law, celebrating it as America’s second Independence Day. The celebration noted the the goals of those with disabilities who want to live independently and contribute to society. Organizers said it is important to remember the day the president and congress ended discrimination against people with disabilities. “It really made it where, if you had a disability you could be assured that you could have access to buildings, particularly public buildings, educational opportunities. It really made it where you go out and get a job,” said Beth James, executive director of JCIL. Organizers want to remind the public that if you know someone who can benefit from the services at the center you should contact JCIL at (731) 668-2211.
