Rockabillys Stadium hosts a ‘Game of Their Own’

JACKSON, Tenn. — It’s been 32 years since the release of the 1992 film, A League of Their Own.

Tuesday evening, a recreation of the one of the games from the film was held in the Hub City.

The Rockabillys hosted a reenactment of a big game from the movie, A League of Their Own, where the Rockford Peaches took on the Racine Belles.

“It’s fun for the community at large but it’s also inspirational for the kids that come out here and watch and see that we reenact this historic game so to speak. So, it’s just a fun affair and we’re looking forward to it,” said Joey Miller, coach for the Racine Bells.

Donning the same uniforms worn in the film, each team was announced and performed a traditional, “old school” walkout and ritual to decide who represented the home team.

According to Chris Clark, the coach of the Rockford Peaches, the women competing in the game came from all across the country to take part.

“Some are local. I think social media helped spread the word. We do have some from as far away as Connecticut, Massachusetts, so I think, you know, it’s amazing when something like this happens, people see it and want to be apart of it,” said Clark.

For many in West Tennessee, who are used to seeing women stepping onto the field for softball, this was a rare occasion to see women play baseball.

“They’re natural athletes. These girls are all very accomplished in college, highschool, so you know, they’re dedicated. They’ve worked hard, and it just comes back. It’s like riding a bike. They’ve played so long and they know what they’re doing. They’re going to do well,” said Miller.

And as a celebrity coach, representing the Racine Belles, our very own WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News Anchor, Diamon O’daniel was invited to join in on the fun.

“I’m really excited, I think tonight will be awesome for everybody that loves this movie, so I think the players are super ready, the Belles are excited. So, we’re ready to rock the Peaches,” said O’Daniel.

The game consisted of mostly genuine play with a few scripted moments sprinkled in.
