Man Follows in Father’s Footsteps, Bikes 2,600 Miles

JACKSON, Tenn.- Union University Senior Josh Bullis spent his summer biking from Maine to Florida. A trip of over 2,600 miles with two of his friends from Union University. “This was kind of a right of passage for me. My dad when he was in college he did a similar trip. He went from Oregon to Virginia Beach,” said Bullis. The 49 day trip brought the father and son closer. “We have talked a lot about our trips and how they were different and how they were similar. He went with one other person, Uncle Chris and they really got on each others nerves,” Bullis said. The Union students biked an average of 60 miles a day. They relied on the kindness of strangers to help them on their journey. “We would wake up and decide where we wanted to stay and decide where we wanted to stay and then call churches in that town and ask if we could pitch a tent on their land and almost always they would invite us inside,” Bullis said. The trip was not always perfect. “The angriest drivers were around New York and Connecticut. We got cussed out a few times just for being on the road,” Bullis said. The scariest part of the trip came after a stop in Florida. “We got there and there were bars on the windows and the guy says, ‘don’t go near the windows. Don’t let anybody see you. Don’t answer the phone and when the guy comes in the morning just yell, “Mike don’t shoot,” and he won’t shoot you,” Bullis said.
