Jackson Housing Authority receives over $700,000 in grant money

JACKSON, Tenn. — Affordable housing is one of the foundations that helps people support their families.

The Tennessee Housing Development Agency made their first stop on Monday, August 12 presenting $810,000 to the city of Greenfield to repair seven houses in their community.

Jackson Housing Authority was the second stop for THDA that presented JHA’s Executive Director Mark Reid, with a check worth $723,528.00.

JHA’s grant is called the Jackson Home Rental Assistance Grant.

“We’re hoping to break ground early or late December. That’s our goal. We’re hoping that we can get them up as fast as possible,” said Reid.

There will be an additional 4 units in the area which will impact up to 16 people.

Some will be built to the left of Salem Missionary Baptist Church on the corner of Southern and Allen street.

Reid said that it was important to remember our every day workers like janitors and cashiers who tend to our needs daily and need a place to live.

“It makes the economy and everything go around. The services that are offered through our low to moderate income families are very important in our communities with all the services and all the positives that they do bring to the neighborhood,” said Reid.

West Tennessee Community Outreach Liaison for THDA Andrea Hudgins told us that JHA will not get repairs to houses, but the funds will be used to build housing in low income areas that will be available for rent.

“It’s a competitive process. So out of all of the places in Tennessee, Mark and his team here at the housing authority were able to get those funds here, so we’re excited for that to be in West Tennessee and spent here in Jackson. That’s to preserve, rehab and produce more affordable housing here in Jackson,” said Huggins.

To qualify, families must be at 80% or below the area median income.
