Union names Daniel Jones as new assistant baseball coach

PRESS RELEASE FROM UNION UNIVERISTY

JACKSON, Tenn. — Union University baseball head coach Casey McGehee has named Daniel Jones as the next assistant coach for the program. Jones replaces Ryley Self who spent two years in the position. Jones was promoted from within after spending the 2023-24 season as the part-time assistant coach for the Bulldogs.

McGehee said, “I am very excited Daniel Jones (DJ), has joined our staff full-time. Coach Jones has an incredible baseball mind and is a gifted communicator and teacher. He shares my vision for what this program can be and understands that building relationships has to be at the forefront of what we do. He is committed to not only developing winning players but more importantly developing young men who will be ready to lead when their time as Union student-athletes is over. I know that the Lord has put Coach Jones here and I cannot wait to see what He does through DJ in the lives of these young men. In short, Union Baseball as well as Union University is better with the addition of Daniel Jones.”

Jones came to Union in the fall of 2023 after spending two seasons as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Coastal Alabama Community College.

Jones said, “Having the opportunity to move into the full-time assistant position for Union University baseball is special. I look forward to the challenge, as well as the opportunity to help our student-athletes grow as people. Coach McGehee and our staff are moving in the right direction. We are excited about what the future holds here for our baseball program.”

In 2019, he was the Chipola College pitching coach, helping the team to the region title and an appearance in the 2019 NJCAA World Series.

Jones had five years of head coach experience including four years at St. Petersburg High School (2015-18), and a year each at Gibbs High School (2014) and IMG Academy (2013).

Before beginning his coaching career, Jones was a minor league umpire in 2012.

Jones played baseball in the Western Canadian Baseball League where he won the pitching triple crown, leading the league in wins, strikeouts, and ERA. He holds the league record for wins in a season.

Jones graduated from Brewton Parker College in 2011 where he played two years of baseball. He spent his first two years of college baseball at Chipola College, advancing to the NJCAA World Series both years and winning the title in 2007.
