Freshmen Move in at Bethel University

MCKENZIE, Tenn.–Freshmen at Bethel University moved on campus Wednesday. Parents and students said going back to school can be expensive. Students poured into University Hall. Freshman Colton Kail talked about supplies he had to pack. “Bedding, clothes, just everything,” he said. Kail brought his parents along for the big move. His mom spent lots of time preparing. “Shopping, getting his bedding, all of his bathroom essentials, everything together,” said Jolanda Sherrod, Kail‘s mom. “It’s been an experience.” Going back to school is not cheap. Kail said he spent more than he expected. “Probably around $1,000″ he said. According to a survey by the National Retail Federation, college shoppers will spend more than $45 billion on apparel, supplies, dorm furnishings, and more. “It’s probably been around $1,500 to $2,000 just on necessities you know, not counting books and stuff like that,” said Sherrod. The same survey also found this year parents will shell out more than $100 on bedding and dorm decorations. “Refrigerators, microwaves, we brought all that today,” said Sherrod. Parents want their children to be prepared. “I’m excited,” said Sherrod. “You know it’s kind of bittersweet. Students at Bethel University will continue to move in over the next few days. The survey by the National Retail Federation also found half of all the college seniors they surveyed plan to live with mom and dad their final year at school. That number is up from 39 percent last year.
