Our Jackson Home announces two major RFPS for Jackson’s Arts District
OUR JACKSON HOME ANNOUNCES TWO MAJOR PUBLIC ART RFPS IN JACKSON, TENNESSEE’S ARTS DISTRICT
Jackson, Tenn (October 1, 2024): Our Jackson Home, in collaboration with the City of Jackson, has announced two new Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for significant public art installations in Downtown Jackson’s Arts District. The two public art projects include a large mural at the AMP and a functional art installation in Anderson Park.
The two projects aim to add vibrancy, cultural identity, and functionality to a heavy foot traffic area of downtown. Both installations will be permanent and expected to last for many years to come, with applying artists required to submit a maintenance plan with their proposals to ensure longevity of the pieces.
“Both of these major public art installations in Jackson’s Arts District will provide a massive step toward allowing artists the opportunity to transform our everyday spaces into shared interactive experiences. These pieces will be integrated into the cultural fabric of our city, and we can’t see what impact they create for years to come,” said Lizzie Emmons, Program Director of Our Jackson Home.
The AMP is a key cultural venue in Jackson’s Arts District, and was identified in the City of Jackson’s public art strategic plan as a prime location for downtown’s next large mural. Our Jackson Home is seeking an artist or artist teams to install a music-themed mural on two walls of the AMP building; the brick and metal exterior staircase wall to the right of the AMP stage, and the teal cinder block wall immediately to the right facing the audience on a sloped hill. Artists are encouraged to explore a wide range of musical themes and local music history. Interested artists researching local music history can access tours and information at the Carnegie Legends Museum in downtown Jackson for free. The art will ultimately reflect the good vibes and energy of the area, emphasizing the AMP’s role in the community as a gathering place for live performances and community events.
The Anderson Park functional art installation will beautify and provide use to an underutilized empty sidewalk area of the park within the Arts District. Our Jackson Home is seeking artists or artist teams to install functional art on the sidewalks or on three existing twelve foot tall awnings. Possible proposals for
the project may include, but are not limited to: Shade, Table Tops, Play Features, Lighting, Wayfinding Sculpture, Sound Sculpture, Kinetic Sculpture, or Environmental Art.
These two public art installation announcements come after the City of Jackson underwent a public art consulting process, led by Dr. Shawn Pitts. The City of Jackson’s new five year public art plan began this fiscal year, with Our Jackson Home managing new public art installations in partnership with the City.
The deadline for artists to apply for the AMP mural is November 22nd, and the deadline to apply for the functional art installation in Anderson Park is December 31st. If you’d like to apply, you can visit Our Jackson Home’s public art projects page here. Links to virtual question and answer sessions for both installations can be found in the RFPs for artists who are interested in applying.
