JMC Library’s American Sign Language classes offer real-world experience
JACKSON, Tenn. — An American Sign Language practice event was held Monday at the Jackson-Madison County Public Library.
The event gathered people to practice ASL with students and deaf individuals. The JMC Public Library is hosting classes throughout the year.
Starting next week, the Family American Sign Language class will be held Mondays from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. This is for children age 5 to 12 and parents. The class is followed by an hour long practice group with games and activities to help improve basic skills.
Level one and two classes are held Tuesdays at 11 a.m., these are for anyone 13 and older.
“We can really help anybody from however much, or little, they know and the important part is to continue using it, just like any other language, you need to use it pretty consistently to actually have it stick,” said Shayne Plunk, adult services manager for the JMC public library.
The library started offering ASL classes around three years ago after reaching out to the Jackson Center for Independent Living which provides services to deaf and hard of hearing people all over West Tennessee.
