WBBJ 7 Forecast Update

WBBJ 7 Forecast Update:

A weak front will pass by Friday morning but it will not be bringing much but a slight temperature drop into the weekend. The main concern in the forecast is going to show up on Sunday. If you are traveling outside of West Tennessee, it is highly recommended to leave on Saturday. If you are traveling within West Tennessee, it is suggested to wrap it up by early Sunday afternoon. Rain showers are coming for everyone, there could be some light snow and ice up north close to Kentucky; there could be some severe thunderstorms down south close to the Mississippi border.

Most of us are kind of in no mans land in the middle. For the majority of West Tennessee, the most likely time to see any sort of winter precipitation will be Sunday evening/night into early Monday morning on the back side of the low pressure system. Severe storms at this time appear to be a bigger concern than ice or snow for most of us currently. We will keep a close eye on things and continue to update you as the system gets a little closer.

THIS WEEK:

After several warmer days in a row, the new year has kicked off with below normal temperatures.  These chilly temps are going to be sticking around for the next couple of weeks it looks like for us. We will be dropping into the teens for sure next week and some of us could even encounter our first single digits of the winter. As of now, our snow chances are not looking great but there will be a few chances this month no doubt.

It was a cold start to our Thursday as morning temperatures feel down into the mid to upper 20s. Thursday was a nice mostly sunny day but a little cool. Highs on Thursday made it up to around 50° and Thursday night lows will be falling down to the mid 30s. The winds will be light and come out of the south on Thursday. The next system will move through on Friday morning. The front will not bring much but it will continue to drop the temperatures some as we head into the weekend.

There will be periods of clouds as the front moves through but also a change in the winds from the south back to the northwest by Friday afternoon. THE WEEKEND:

Saturday looks cool but dry across the Mid South. The next major system is coming in on Sunday. As of now, it looks to bring a large amount of cold rain with it to West Tennessee. The further north you are, your chances are better for a wintry mix or even some light snow. There could be a few storms mixing in as well and chances for those will be greatest for those who live close to the Mississippi border. A solid 1/2″ to 1″ of rain looks to be on the way. As the system moves out, on the backside of the low, a few flurries or a spitting wintry mix will also be possible Sunday night into Monday morning.

Highs on Saturday will only reach the low to mid 40s with the winds staying out of the north. Saturday night will be chilly but not that bad with lows falling into the low to mid 30s. As the night goes on, the winds are forecast to shift back to the south and that will increase the humidity and warm us up a bit on Sunday. Highs on Sunday will reach the low to mid 50s. The reason for the wind shift will be a powerful low pressure system that will be coming in from the west. Sunday night will be cool and fall back down near freezing but it will be next week when the major cold blast and arctic air will be moving in.

Snow chances likely stay north of Madison County'

NEXT WEEK:

By far the coldest weather this winter is on the way for next week. There will be some days where we struggle to get above freezing and there will be nights where many of us drop down near or into the single digits. Overall the cold pattern looks mostly dry, but every day next week it will be cold enough for a wintry mix or snow if we get any showers to develop. Highs on Monday will make it up to around 40, but highs will only reach the low 30s on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Temperatures are expected to drop even further as we wrap up next week and head into the following weekend. Please remember the 4 P’s next week (people, pets, plants and pipes). This will be the type of cold to bust pipes and cause frostbite if you get stranded outdoors. January is also going to do a number on our pocket books for heating costs, just a heads up from that. Expect your next month’s bill to be 2-3 times as high as the previous month’s bill.
