Community members gather in Bolivar for Martin Luther King Jr. Day
BOLIVAR, Tenn. — A Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration was held Monday at the Luez Theatre in Bolivar.
The keynote speaker was Rev. Johnteris Tate from Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Los Angeles. Local pastor Ernest Polk of St. James Missionary Church in Jackson was also present.
Jonathan Joy, a former city councilman for the City of Bolivar, started this program almost 6 years ago. Joy remembered programs like this one growing up but then vanishing.
He decided to try and bring them back and says he thanks the good Lord for providing the means.
“This is a community event. It’s not about Jonathan Joy, it’s not about Reverend Tate, it’s not about Pastor Polk — it’s about the community. Get you involved, you know. Our theme today is ‘Where do we go from here?’ You know, is the dream dead? Where do we go from here?,” said Joy.
For those who missed today, this program will be occurring next year as well.
