Songwriters battle it out for a chance at the finals

BROWNSVILLE, Tenn.—Local songwriters battle it out for a chance to compete in the finale.

The West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center hosts a qualifying round for the 7th annual Tennessee Songwriters Week.

The event took place Saturday from 1 in the afternoon until 5 in the evening in Brownsville.

The contest round is open to all genres of songwriters who had the opportunity to perform their original works in front of a panel of judges.

Songs are judged on lyric quality, narrative, melody and overall performance.

Winners from Saturday’s competition will move on to the next round at the West Tennessee Showcase in Memphis.

From there, finalists will compete for a chance to perform in March at the well-known Bluebird Café in Nashville.

“It’s just a lot of fun. You know a lot of people, like-minded songwriter and musicians come together and get to perform and share ideas. It’s always a good time. We don’t come to win ,we just come to have a good time,” said William Canaday, previous winner.

The next round of competition will take place February 25 at Lafayette’s Music Room in Memphis.
