BBB: Beware loan processing company scam

JACKSON, Tenn. — A new scam is on the rise that is trying to trick people out of money.

The most recent scam has to do with fake loan processing companies. They will call you posing as representatives to try and trick you into giving your information. Todnetta Trice, communications specialist with the Better Business Bureau, says this is a problem in our area.

“We have seen an uptick of about 15 in the Mid-South/West TN area in the last two weeks. So that is pretty extreme. We actually got reached out from our international office from all of the BBB pretty much issuing a nationwide alert about this,” said Trice.

Even if you do not answer the phone, they will leave a voicemail to try and get you to call back. Do not do this.

“Scammers are aggressively targeting consumers. They want you to call back. They want you to kind of, you know, give them a call back so they can fish for more information,” said Trice.

If you do accidently fall into one of these traps, it is always good to report this information. This can help you, as well as others.

“Report it asap. Federal Trade Commission. ftc.gov. That’s the federal. So that’s kind of the highest place you can go. If you did give out a little bit of information that you feel like wasn’t really bad, definitely report it to the BBB at our BBB Scam Tracker,” said Trice.

It is always important to remember to not ever call numbers back that you may not recognize. You can look up these phone numbers to see if there are any scam reports tied to them.

The BBB asks you to stay vigilant and cautions to protect yourself from phishing scams like this one, if an offer seems too good to be true, it likely is.
