USJ Teacher Honored by St. Jude

JACKSON, Tenn. — ALSAC, the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude Children‘s Research Hospital, named University School of Jackson Lower School Counselor Laura Moore the Math-A-Thon Coordinator of the Year. Moore was honored at the 2013 Volunteer Awards ceremony in the Memphis Cook Convention Center attended by people from across the country. Under Moore‘s leadership, USJ Lower School students raised $66,057 during the “Dreaming of a Cure” Math-A-Thon in February. It was the largest individual amount in the St. Jude Math-A-Thon‘s 35-year history. Moore received the award from Richard Shadyac Jr., CEO of ALSAC, the cancer hospital‘s fundraising arm. “I‘m thrilled to be recognized by such an important organization that strives to change the world and save the lives of children,” Moore said. “This award is a testament to the hard work and creative fundraising efforts from our young students at USJ.” USJ students dedicated their fundraising efforts to the memory of Kim Yelverton, a former Lower School guidance counselor who died of pancreatic cancer last year. Students raised money by collecting pledges for the number of math problems they would complete during the Math-A-Thon in school. Some went door-to-door, some sold snacks at basketball games, and some dreamed up other creative ways to raise the money. USJ has been a very strong partner that consistently places in the top 10 fundraising schools for the hospital, according to St. Jude. University School of Jackson is West Tennessee‘s college preparatory school. It offers a challenging curriculum in a nurturing and safe environment, educating students from pre-kindergarten through the 12th Grade. For more information, visit usjbruins.org.
