Fatal Wreck in Obion County Claims Life of Fourteen Year Old

SOUTH FULTON, Tenn. – Neighbors along Chapel Hill Road say they heard the sound of a fast moving car before they saw anything. Then they said they heard a sound they’ll never forget: the sound of crumpling metal. Neighbor Dolores Quinton heard the crash, called 911, and rushed to provide aid. “All I could see was the car flipped over,” she said. Quinton then ran back to her home and got medical supplies. “Then one boy said ‘my brother is dead and he was 14,'” she said. The fourteen year old killed was Chance Lyle. There were five others in the vehicle at the time, and two were airlifted to Memphis. The Tennessee Highway Patrol says none of the six passengers were wearing seat belts. Friends say 42 year old Christopher Clark was driving the SUV to a funeral before winding through Melanie Kimbel’s front yard. “It scares me that something so horrific happened in our front yard,” Kimbel said. Kimbel says one of her family members was driving farming equipment when Clark swerved to avoid it. The SUV then flew over the median and Clark over-corrected, flipping the vehicle, and landing in a tree. Quinton says there have been dozens of people stopping to pay their respects to the boy. “It’s a really big deal for the kids in High School. It’s just been car loads of kids looking at the scene,” she said. Friends say Chance who was a twin was in the prime of life and say they can’t believe he’s really gone. “For all the parents, family friends, my family is praying for them. I just cannot imagine I just cannot imagine,” Kimbel said. Tennessee Highway Patrol says criminal charges are pending as well as blood and alcohol tests.
