JACKSON, Tenn.–One local school is kicking off their Energy Awareness Day in the Hub City.

The students and staff have run a campaign all year long to save energy and cut costs.

They started out last year in August with a $10,000 utility bill, and every month they have managed to bring the bill down now sitting at $6,674.87.
They are now rated as an 89 Energy Star School.

For their giveaway Friday, every student leaves with a four pack of LED light bulbs as part of their energy saving program.
Arlington Elementary aims to be on of the top schools to have a chance to win $25,000 with this program.

“The staff buy in and the students buy in It has just been phenomenal. The students are excited about it. We have a check list beside each classroom door and so students go through at the end of the day to check off in making sure the lights are off, and the thermostat is at a certain temperature. If it’s not something that’s absolutely necessary, it’s unplugged,” says Cindy Emison, writing teacher at Arlington Elementary.

Because Arlington Elementary has completed all of the energy saving program requirements, they’re already eligible for a $10,000 award for the school.
