Road project near Fort Campbell almost done
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – A long-running road project on Interstate 24 near Fort Campbell is coming to an end.
The Leaf-Chronicle of Clarksville reports (http://leafne.ws/1a4MWkb ) that finishing work on the stretch between exits 86 and 93 in Christian County, Ky., are underway, and the project is expected to be completed within the next few days.
The contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet on Saturday reopened the northbound ramps at Fort Campbell Boulevard, about seven miles north of the Tennessee state line.
The $14 million improvement project began in April. It included paving, erosion repairs, drainage improvements and guardrail upgrades. Further improvements along ramps that were not part of this project are still planned.
Clarksville resident Nick Horn, who commutes to work at Fort Campbell, says it will be a relief to have the road work finished.
Keith Todd, public information officer for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, said crews did what they could to keep traffic moving.
“We have a major surge of eastbound traffic on I-24 through Kentucky on Friday afternoon from about 3 p.m. to about 7 p.m. When you add in the local traffic surge from people commuting from Fort Campbell toward Clarksville and Nashville along I-24, we knew the Christian County work zone was likely to have issues,” Todd said.
“That’s why, whenever possible, the Christian County work zone was taken down by about noon on Friday and then put back up sometime over the weekend. Still, there were some crashes along the work zone that snarled traffic on several occasions.”
