How Would Federal Shut Down Affect West TN?

As leaders in Washington work to make a decision on federal budget cuts, the threat of a federal government shut down creeps closer. Local experts say it may take a few days before West Tennesseans feel the full effect of a shutdown, but anyone working directly with the federal government is at risk by midnight on Friday. In addition, military families could see a delay in paychecks, social security claims will be put on hold and anyone filing their taxes through the mail could have to wait longer for their return. One Jackson attorney says the true effect will depend on how long the potential shut down lasts. “There’s going to be delays in vital services that we require simply because you’re lost two days, five days, two weeks, six weeks, whatever the shutdown’s for. If it goes much over a week or two, I think you might as well just shut it down for a year because I think that’s the kind of impact you’re gonna have,” said Jackson attorney Robert Hill. Local CPAs want to remind everyone that in the even of a shutdown, tax forms still should be turned in by the April 18 deadline.
