EAST JACKSON — The Madison County grand jury reviewed the mid-October homicide of Clinton Berry today and decided Carlos Ross was justified in his actions. The matter is closed. Around 3:10 a.m. Oct. 16, police were called to Richcove apartments, located at 520 Berry Street. Clinton Berry, 49, and his girlfriend, Donna Love, 53, had both been shot. Berry and Love were transported by ambulance to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. Berry was pronounced dead, and Love was transported to the Regional Medical Center at Memphis. The investigation has shown that Berry and Love lived in Richcove apartments. Berry and a man had a fight that started outside on the second floor of the apartment complex. The fight continued downstairs. After the fight, Love handed Berry a sword. Carlos Ross, 33, of Nashville, was outside but was not a party to the previous fight. Without provocation, Berry approached Ross with the sword. Ross then shot Berry and shot Love who was armed with a handgun. Ross turned himself in to Jackson police around 4:30 p.m. Oct. 17. He was questioned and then booked into the Madison County Jail on an outstanding probation violation warrant out of Davidson County, Division VI Criminal Court. Ross was on probation for a drug-related charge in Nashville. He was released to Davidson County authorities.
