Day 1: Trial begins for man charged with murder of Haywood Co. teen

BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. — Trial begins for a suspect in a shooting that left a teen dead.

On February 10, 2023, four teenagers were returning to Brownsville around 9:40 p.m. following a basketball game when shots rang out, striking their vehicle. One victim was grazed, while the backseat passenger, Christine Michael, was fatally shot.

Deputies with the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office reported later that they located the victims on West Main Street near Sunset Circle in Brownsville. The vehicle was struck many times by gunshot rounds.

According to Sheriff Billy Garrett, emergency personnel arrived on scene and worked with the wounded. Later, Michael was pronounced dead at the local community hospital.

On February 12, 2023, then 18-year-old Kevion Davis and 16-year-old Bishop Owens were arrested and charged with first-degree murder with no bond. This Tuesday, July 29, Davis appeared in Haywood County Circuit Court for day one of his murder trial.

Day one of the murder trial primarily consisted of jury selection. Day two will likely consist of opening statements from the prosecution and defense, as well as, witness testimonies.
