According to the U.S. Department of State, America is facing a deadly drug crisis. In 2024, there was an estimated 80,391 drug overdose deaths, according to data from the CDC.

We spoke with Johnie Carter, director of the West Tennessee Drug Task Force, who tells us some of the issues they face.

“Drug use in West Tennessee is on the rise somewhat. We’re having a lot of issues with the adulteration of drugs where fentanyl is being mixed with other drugs, xylazine for example. It’s being pressed into pills,” said Carter.

Carter says in some instances these drugs are being misrepresented as oxycodone, an opioid pain reliever, which can pose a serious health risk.

“Fentanyl is one of those things that we worry the most about because we always tell folks it’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when. If you’re taking fentanyl on a regular basis, it’s not a matter of if you’re going to overdose, it’s a matter of when you’re going to overdose,” said Carter.

Task force officers are working around the clock to keep illegal drugs off the streets. Carter says they see a lot of marijuana, methamphetamine, fentanyl, crack cocaine, and even mushrooms.

“There’s this big debate about marijuana, but the sale of marijuana also invites gang violence and other violence crimes with it, as does any of the other drugs. And, it’s not just drugs, any type of illegal business invites violence,” said Carter.

As officers work to keep the community safe, they encourage residents to get involved and report any suspicious activity.

Carter urges residents to be cautious and to refrain from buying any pills off the street. If you spot anything suspicious, dial 9-1-1 or contact your local law enforcement agency.
