JACKSON, Tenn. – After a Jackson-Madison County School’s bus was searched in connection with the shooting death in Lincoln Courts, Tuesday, school system officials were not taking any risks. Increased security was added to both North Side High School and Liberty Technology Magnet High School. Principals at both schools said despite the increased presence of Jackson Police Department officers, classes went on as usual. Superintendent Dr. Verna Ruffin said the extra officers may have been alarming to some parents and students as they arrived to school, but their purpose was to install a sense of added safety. “We are very cognizant of things that may go on in the community, and we want to make certain that once students are with us that they are very safe,” Dr. Ruffin said. “We would rather have the collaborative with the police department and emergency units on site and not need them, then to ever be in a situation where we need them and we are not proactive.” Dr. Ruffin also said that student and teacher safety will remain a key priority, and the school system will continue working with the police in any case necessary.
