JACKSON, Tenn.- Jackson police are searching for the gunman who shot one man and his five year old niece in the Madison County Sheriff’s Department parking lot around 12:20 p.m., Saturday. Police responded to a shooting around 12:20, and found one man with a gunshot wound to his back at the Criminal Justice Complex in Downtown Jackson. The victim’s 5-year-old niece was treated by first responders on the scene for a gunshot graze wound to her shoulder. Investigators said the victim had driven his family to the complex to get away from a gunman who opened fire on his family while parked in the Madison County Sheriff’s Department Parking lot. Police said the family was targeted while driving through East Jackson. “What we learned is that a man had left his sister’s house who lives in East Jackson and he was traveling and he noticed that a white SUV was following him,” said Capt. Tyreece Miller, Jackson Police Dept. Investigators have identified Corey Gray, 27 as the driver of the White Chevy Trailblazer SUV that was following the victim and his family. Police said they believe Gray was armed with a handgun. Police said the victim pulled into the Sheriff’s Department looking for help. “He pulled over onto the parking lot hoping that this would stop the vehicle from following him,” said Capt. Miller. “But people who were in the car opened fire on him and the car was shot into.” Officers said the victim, who was shot in the back was inside of his car with his sister, 5-year-old-niece and 8-month-old nephew. Police said the victim then drove his family to the Criminal Justice Complex to get away from the shooter. “Things do happen and it is in the back of your mind as a mother that it could be your child that’s hurt,” said eyewitness Susan Marise. Both the driver and his 5-year-old niece were taken to the Jackson-Madison County General Hospital where they were treated and released. Police said Gray is wanted for attempted murder and four counts of Aggravated Assault. Gray is considered to be armed and dangerous. He was last seen driving a White Chevy Trailblazer. “It just goes to show you that there was someone specifically targeted but a small innocent child was injured so that should infuriate everyone,” said Capt. Miller. “As it infuriates us, and we want this man off the streets. We need the community to come together and help us.” Gray is described as a black man, 5 foot seven, 200 pounds. Officials said his last known address was on Preston Street in Jackson. The Madison County Sheriff’s Department is assisting police in the investigation.
