SELMER, Tenn. – There’s something magical about choosing the perfect Christmas Tree. Those who grow the traditional holiday decorations say it’s a lot of work and takes dedication. “It’s a year round thing it takes plenty of work to do year round,” Charlie Duncan said, Christmas Tree Farm Owner. “As soon as Christmas is over by the time you get everything cleaned and put away it’s time to start trimming and planting and just keep going.” The trees take years to grow and the work around the farm does not stop. Farmers are constantly planting, trimming, shaping, and protecting the crop year round. This year’s weather in West Tennessee helped farmers with the appearance of the trees. Farmers say the extra rain during the spring is beneficial because with the fertilizer they use help the tree tremendously. This gives the trees a bright green appearance. “They’re evergreens and a winter grown thing,” Duncan said. “When they get the water they need in the summertime that makes them grow and right now they’re growing.” Despite the amount of work that goes year round with the trees, Duncan says it’s a fun family business and makes Christmas extra special for everyone involved. “It’s a fun business, it’s all about kids, and remembering what it’s all about.”
