Safety reminders to protect your children from area sex offenders when trick-or-treating
JACKSON, Tenn. — Halloween is quickly approaching and we have information on how to stay aware of sex offenders, and what you need to know to keep your child safe.

Across West Tennessee, many people are preparing for the fun on Halloween night.
Some may enjoy celebrating by dressing up or indulging in candy, however there are things to be aware of before heading out to trick-or-treat.

Sex offenders are individuals who have committed a sexual offense which could include rape, sexual assault, or child molestation.
There is an estimate of around 400 registered sex offenders in Madison County and they are ordered to follow rules on Halloween night.
“They can not dress up in costume and they are not allowed to have their porch light on,” said Captain Tracey Grisham, with the Henderson County Sheriff’s Department.
Offenders are prohibited from having their porch light on during Halloween because a lit porch light may indicate the home is accepting trick-or-treaters.
These offenders are also not allowed to hand out candy or open the door to trick-or-treaters.
To avoid problems with the offenders, Capt. Grisham urges to check your local offender registry.
“I would check the sex offender registry for my area and I would just avoid that house,” said Capt. Grisham.
On Halloween night, the Tennessee Department of Correction will also go to homes to verify that the offender or offenders living in the home are following the restrictions for the holiday.
