Health department encourages vaccinations amid uptick in whopping cough cases

JACKSON, Tenn. — The Madison County Health Department has some information about how to protect yourself and others from sickness this season.

Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is a highly contagious respiratory infection causing severe coughing fits.

It’s a bacterial infection that’s spreads through airborne droplets, and is especially dangerous for infants.

Madison County Health Department has noticed an uptick in cases throughout Tennessee so they want the community to be prepared.

“Vaccination is the best way to prevent it, so I encourage everyone to make sure you’re up to date on your vaccines for your child, for yourself, especially if you’re a caregiver or someone that going to around babies, be sure that you’re up to date on those doses,” said Ginger Rowsey, public health information officer.
