Jackson Police warn of dangers associated with celebratory gunfire

INFORMATION FROM THE JACKSON POLICE DEPARTMENT:

Separating Fact from Fiction: The Dangers of Celebratory Gunfire

A common misconception about celebratory gunfire is that bullets shot upwards simply vanish into space. However, the reality is that these bullets inevitably return to Earth, potentially striking the ground, vehicles, buildings, or people.

Another myth is that celebratory gunfire is harmless. In reality, firing bullets randomly can result in death and injury, making it a potentially fatal activity that regularly claims the lives of innocent bystanders.

For those unfortunate enough to be hit by falling bullets, the risk of sustaining a fatal wound is significantly higher than in typical shooting incidents.

This increased risk is primarily due to the higher likelihood of head trauma, as those struck by falling projectiles are more likely to suffer cranial impacts. Although the bullets may have slowed down after being fired into the sky, they still possess enough force to cause severe skull damage.
