Volunteers tackle invasive plants at Cypress Grove Nature Park
JACKSON, Tenn.—Volunteers at Cypress Grove Nature Park are helping to remove an invasive plant species.
The plant is called privet, and it’s typically used as a decorative plant for most yards.
They often have long heads of white flowers followed by black berries, and Chinese privet can even be used in traditional herbal medicines.
Individual plants can be pulled by hand but it’s important to remove all roots to prevent any possibility of it sprouting again.
“The one that we’re targeting today is privet, which is an invasive species from Asia that people use as an ornamental and then the berries get eaten by birds; and the seeds that are in berries are then spread far and wide places like this which is, you know we want to have a healthy ecosystem that’s not infiltrated by privet,” said Darius Mullin, Recreation Coordinator.
If you by any chance find this plant in your backyard, feel free to aid in the effort of removing it.
