Jackson-Madison County NAACP hosts celebrations, march honoring MLK
JACKSON, Tenn. — The NAACP of Jackson-Madison County celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Junior Day in a big way Monday. Different activities were held throughout the day to commemorate the holiday.

The organization’s theme this year is “The Fierce Urgency of Now.” The day started out with a breakfast to encourage fellowship.
During the breakfast, there were many speakers that reminded the community to uplift freedom and students from Lane College sang.
President of the NAACP of Jackson-Madison County Harrell Carter says that the organization honors Dr. King by being present.
“We honor him by just showing up and putting forth the energy,” said Carter.

The organization also held a march after the breakfast to use their voices. The march started at the T.R. White Sportsplex and ended at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church.

President of the NAACP Jackson-Madison County Youth Council Jeremyah McGill tells us his message behind the march.
“Our message would be to continue to stand up for injustice even when it is hard,” said McGill.
The NAACP was founded in 1909 nationally and the organization continues to fight every day for civil rights. They also had a MLK “The message” at Mt. Zion Church, a day of community service, and a MLK discussion panel on zoom.
