Jackson Fire Department urges residents to practice fire safety during winter, ice storms
PRESS RELEASE FROM THE JACKSON FIRE DEPARTMENT:
JACKSON, TENN – With the likelihood of winter and ice storms impacting our area, the Jackson Fire Department is reminding residents that severe cold and power outages can significantly increase the risk of fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. Taking the right precautions can help keep your family safe during these dangerous conditions.
Staying Warm Safely During Power Outages
When temperatures drop and electricity is lost, it’s important to heat your home safely.
DO:
- Use extra blankets, warm clothing, and sleeping bags to stay warm.
- Keep interior doors closed to retain heat.
- If available, use a fireplace or wood stove that is properly vented and maintained.
- Check on elderly neighbors, children, and those with medical needs.
DO NOT:
- Use generators, grills, camp stoves, or propane heaters inside your home, garage, or near windows or doors.
- Burn charcoal indoors or use your oven or stovetop as a heat source.
- Leave candles unattended or place them near flammable materials.
These actions can quickly lead to fires or deadly carbon monoxide buildup.
Generator Safety
Portable generators should only be used outdoors, far away from doors, windows, and vents. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, invisible gas that can be fatal within minutes. If your home has battery-powered or battery-backup carbon monoxide alarms, ensure they are working properly.
Downed Power Line Safety
Ice storms can cause power lines to fall:
- Always assume downed power lines are live and dangerous.
- Stay at least 30 feet away from any fallen line.
- Do not attempt to move debris tangled in power lines.
- Report downed lines to your utility provider immediately and call 911 if there is an immediate danger.
Fire Prevention Reminders
- Keep space heaters at least three feet away from anything that can burn.
- Never leave space heaters running while sleeping or unattended.
- Ensure smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are working and have fresh batteries.
Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are available to residents by contacting the Jackson Fire Department at 731-425-8350.
Project Fire E.S.C.A.P.E. Planning: Plan A, Plan B, Plan C
If a fire occurs, every household should have an escape plan and everyone should know what to do and where to go.
- Plan A:Â Your primary exit.
- Plan B:Â An alternate exit if Plan A is blocked.
- Plan C: If escape is not possible, shelter in place behind a closed door and call 911. Give dispatchers your exact location in your home even if you can hear sirens.
Every Moment Counts
Winter storms create challenging conditions for both residents and emergency responders. Preparing ahead of time, knowing your escape plans, and making safe choices during power outages can prevent fires, injuries, and loss of life.
