JACKSON, Tenn. — Before heading out for Thanksgiving, whether a short or long trip, experts have a few tips in case you run into bad weather. Website independenttraveler.com has six suggestions. The first tip, make sure your car is up for the trip. Not all SUVs or 4x4s are meant for severe weather. Number two, get your car inspected before heading out. “I just check all my fluids and things in the car and brake fluid, transmission fluid, things like that,” Jeffery Shaw said, local mechanic. Shaw travels frequently to Chicago and understands tip number three very well: not all roads are created equally and most bridges freeze quickly. Something he encounters often in Illinois. “I don’t take any salt cause I’m used to it I lived up there for 30 years,” Shaw said. Number four and five are good reminders when driving in bad weather, slow down. Keep your headlights, taillights and windows clean. Last but not least pack an emergency kit with things like a flashlight, extra batteries, and a windshield scraper. “Well just make sure that we’ve got blankets and coats in case something happens,” traveler Tom Asher said. “We’ve got some food and snacks cause we’re traveling a long way.”
