JPD releases officer names in library shooting investigation

PRESS RELEASE FROM THE JACKSON POLICE DEPARTMENT:

[Jackson, TN] – The Jackson Police Department is releasing additional information regarding the officer-involved shooting that occurred on February 1, 2026, at the Jackson-Madison County Library, located at 433 Lafayette Street.

In accordance with department policy, and at the request of District Attorney Jody Pickens, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) responded to the scene and is conducting a thorough and independent investigation due to the involvement of Jackson Police Department officers.

The officers involved in the incident are:

  • Officer Clayton Smith, who has served with the Jackson Police Department for 11 years
  • Officer Landon Jones, who has served with the Jackson Police Department for 9 years

Both officers have been placed on paid administrative leave in a non-enforcement status according to department policy.

Chief Thom Corley stated, “The safety of our community is always our top priority. We are committed to being transparent throughout this process and keeping our citizens informed. Requesting the TBI to conduct an independent investigation ensures accountability and maintains the public’s trust in our department.”
