Jackson council considers first pay raise since 2003

JACKSON, Tenn. — The City of Jackson’s Council Member Pay Review Committee met Wednesday to discuss proposed compensation changes that would impact city council members for the next term.

City council members have not received a raise since 2003. The proposed raise would increase their salary to $750 a month starting in summer 2027.

The proposed compensation also includes a 2.5% increase per year through 2030.

Vice Mayor and District 7 Councilwoman Marda Wallace said she believes this is the right thing to propose.

“There has not been an increase since 2003 and we looked across the country and I really could not find a salary for city council members that was lower,” Wallace said. “But it was to be looked at every 4 years and it was the right thing to do since it hadn’t been since 2003, so I hope taxpayers will feel comfortable with that.”

The proposed council member pay compensation will be voted on at the next city council meeting.
