JACKSON, Tenn.–Ash Wednesday has arrived in the Hub City and churches across the community had special services to participate.

Ash Wednesday marks the start of Lent, the 40-day period for reflection for Christians leading up to Easter.
Some services start with scripture or singing hymns but receiving the mark of the cross on your forehead with ashes is the staple of the holiday.

It’s also tradition to practice self-denial in giving up something personal for the remainder of the season.
First United Methodist Church hosted their Ash Wednesday service Wednesday evening and attendee Jane Ramer tell us she is giving up candy for Lent.

“I feel okay, i feel okay. I think it’ll be, I’ll want it, and every time I want it, I’ll think about Jesus and if he gave his life for me, I can certainly give up candy for a few weeks,” said Ramer.

The next holiday in the cycle leading up to Easter is Good Friday which is on April 3.
