Students at Jackson-Central Merry hold black history event
EAST JACKSON, Tenn. — In a powerful performance, Jackson-Central Merry students gave their century of black history commemoration Friday afternoon through a display of music and art.

The program featured students from JCM middle school, highschool, and Early College high.
Students from each school came together to perform different art forms inspired by black history.
Fine arts coordinator, Nadia Beard, tells us what the energy was like at Friday’s event. “Today we celebrated and commemorated 100 years of black history, and so we had an awesome time I mean there was not a dry eye or unlifted voice today,” shared Beard.

Students were able to listen to music across different decades to gain an understanding of what those times were like.
Each performance demonstrated the students’ commitment and Beard tells us that although the event is over, their work is not finished.
“This is not just the ending, but, somewhat and will always be, the beginning,” explained Beard. “We stand on the foundation of so many different ancestors, especially, Mr. Austin Merry, and I know today he would be smiling down on us.”
The crowd included families, students, and staff who cheered on the performers and learned some Hub City history.

Students and staff hope to do similar events in the future.
