Local Stores Stay Open Nearly 2 Days Straight for Black Friday

NORTH JACKSON — Thursday shoppers got a head start on black Friday shopping. Thursday night overnight shopping kicked off Black Friday and many started earlier than that. Markeitha Rigney relies on the sales to mark off everything on her Christmas shopping list. “Its important for me to get things my kids want so I’m a strong supporter of black Friday” She says this day will be a long one and that she will be shopping for at least the next 12 hours. “I’ll be shopping probably until tomorrow. I’ll be in Walmart all night.. I’ll be at the 6 o’clock, the 8 o’clock and then I’ll be there all morning,” Rigney said. She says even saving a little bit will help her out. “I save $50 plus, which helps because I’m a single mom. I try to save any way I can.” The workers at these stores see a different side of the story. “It’s so interesting to watch the lines get backed up. People get crazy, they get mad, they get frustrated. Anyone in retail can tell you its an experience.” Some shoppers say today is about avoiding the Black Friday rush. “Kind of avoiding Black Friday, I’m just going to do it a day ahead.” But Markeitha says it is unavoidable and that despite the long hours she spends going from store to store, she enjoys it too. “A lot of people don’t like to do it. I like to do it too so its fun for me,” Rigney said. Many stores are staying open through the night, like K-Mart, which is staying open for 41 hours straight. Some stores have different sales tonight than they will have for Black Friday tomorrow. They’re doing this in hopes of cutting down the volume of customers that are in the stores at one time.
